A process, not just a test
After a qualifying DOT violation, a driver must complete the required SAP evaluation and recommended education or treatment steps. A SAP determines whether the driver has demonstrated successful compliance with the recommendations before the employer arranges return-to-duty testing.
Before returning to covered work
A driver must meet the applicable return-to-duty requirements before resuming safety-sensitive functions. DOT return-to-duty drug collections are directly observed. The required test type and result criteria follow the applicable rules and SAP process.
Plan for the next stage
A return-to-duty test does not finish the entire testing obligation. Follow-up testing is conducted according to the SAP’s prescribed plan and is separate from random testing. Employers handle required reporting and decisions; QuickLabs coordinates testing services.
Employer responsibilities remain with the employer. Read the official DOT / FMCSA guidance.
